Unai Emery

Unai Emery took over from Arsene Wenger before the start of the season and he’s helped bring back strong and winning character to the team.

After 12 League matches, the manager has suffered only two defeats and has conceded fewer goals compared to last season.

In his interview with a Spanish reporter, the former PSG manager claimed that the Gunners were declining under his predecessor before he stepped into the Emirates Stadium.

“Arsenal was in a decline and We had to stop this and begin climbing,” he told Marca, a Spanish football website.

According to him, the North London club are not what they used to be some years back because Wenger decided to upgrade his frontline without paying much attention to his team’s defensive qualities.

“With time, only technical quality and offensive freedom were taken care of while losing defensive structure,” he said

He also said the team are not only going down the drain but also becoming a club that new players don’t love to join because of their lack of winning mentality under the Frenchman.

Here are some stats that backed up the Spaniard’s claim about his predecessor’s Arsenal team

Defensive Errors

During Wenger’s last season with the team, Arsenal made more mistakes at the back than any other top six clubs.

The most painful part is that almost all of the errors led to goals. The team conceded 15 goals as a result of defensive errors and incompetence.

Woeful performances against top six clubs

Things were so bad for Arsenal during last season that all, but two, top six clubs defeated them.

The team’s performance were nothing to praise whenever they tackle any top six clubs.

Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City all got maximum points against the Gunners.

Unwanted Records

Arsenal became the first Premier League side to have suffered a 10-goal aggregate defeat in the Champions League when the team were thrashed by Bayern Munich.

Two seasons ago, the Gunners conceded five goals at home for the first time in history.

With all of these unwanted results, you would agree that Arsenal were declining under Wenger
