Mateo Kovacic

Chelsea are nearing a loan deal for Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic, according to reports.

The Blues have been linked to several targets since the start of the summer window, as Maurizio Sarri hopes to bolster his squad in his first season at Stamford Bridge.

Kovacic who was part of the Croatian team that impressed at the World Cup in Russia, has said he wants to leave Santiago Bernabeu this summer, in order to get more playing time elsewhere.

However, Real Madrid are said to be unwilling to allow the midfielder leave this summer and have tried convincing him to stay one more season at the club under new boss, Julen Lopetegui.

But Marca is reporting that Chelsea are ready to sign Kovacic on a season-long loan after reaching an agreement with the player and the deal is set to announced shortly

It is understood that the midfielder forced the move by refusing to engage in training activities with the club until his future is resolved.

The imminent arrival of Matteo Kovacic could spell doom for the likes of Ross Barkley and Danny Drinkwater who might have to leave the club in order to get more playing time, after failing to impress in the first seasons at the club.
