Dutch Eredivisie champions Ajax Amsterdam have completed the signing of defender Lisandro Martinez from Argentine club Defensa.

The 21-year-old defender joins Ajax on a four-year deal with an option for a fifth year.

Lisandro Martinez is a utility player who can play either as a left-back or as a centre back.

He made his debut for the Argentine national team earlier this year during the 3-1 defeat to fellow South Americans Venezuela in an international friendly.

Lisandro Martinez is likely to be the potential replacement for club skipper Matthijs De Ligt who’s expected to leave the club this summer.

The 19-year-old Dutch defender has been attracting interest from the major clubs on the European football scene after leading Ajax to two major trophies this season.

Champions League finalists Liverpool are one of the numerous clubs interested in his signature.

According to trusted Spanish journalist Guillem Balague, Liverpool have already held talks about the possibility of signing De Ligt who could cost at least £60m.

He could potentially form a potent centre back partnership with Virgil Van Dijk just like what’s obtainable with the Dutch national team.

Both players are the first choice centre backs for the Netherlands and they are expected to play a key role when the Nations League semifinals start next month.
