Liverpool Target 28-Year-Old Cardiff City Goalie As Backup Option

Newly crowned European champions Liverpool have joined the race to sign Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge as they target a new backup option for undisputed first choice shot stopper Alisson Becker.

Brazilian international Alisson Becker is the first choice goalkeeper at Liverpool following his big money move from Italian Serie A giants AS Roma last summer.

According to Wales Online via Goal, Neil Etheridge is being targeted by the Reds as a second choice behind the aforementioned Alisson Becker.

Liverpool will have to contend with other interested Premier League sides like West Ham United and Aston Villa.

Both West Ham United and Aston Villa have had separate £8m bids rejected for the 29-year-old Cardiff City goalkeeper.

Neil Etheridge was involved in all the 38 games played during the just concluded Premier League campaign but it was not enough for Welsh club Cardiff City who were relegated from the top flight of English football.

Liverpool will almost certainly need a new backup goalkeeper with doubts lingering over the future of both Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius.

Simon Mignolet is likely to leave Liverpool this summer after playing second fiddle to Alisson Becker throughout the season.

On his part, Loris Karius spent the season on loan at Turkish club Besiktas and he does not have a future at Liverpool.
