Matthijs de Ligt

Premier League table toppers Liverpool are reportedly prepared to do battle with other interested clubs in their quest to sign highly rated Ajax Amsterdam defender Matthijs De Ligt.

Don Balon claim that the Reds will fight it out with clubs like Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea for the right to sign the young Dutch international centre back in the summer.

Matthijs De Ligt, 19, has been in superb form for his Ajax Amsterdam side this season and it’s not surprising that a lot of clubs are lining up to sign the talented defender.

His form has propelled Ajax into the top two places on the Dutch Eredivisie table as well as the knockout stage of the Champions League.

De Ligt and Ajax will face holders Real Madrid in the last 16 of Europe’s premier competition later this month.

Liverpool have four senior central defenders namely Virgil Van Dijk (Netherlands), Joe Gomez (England), Dejan Lovren (Croatia) and Joel Matip (Cameroon) though they have been subjected to a mini-injury crisis in the last few weeks.

Matthijs De Ligt could link up with compatriot Van Dijk at Liverpool as a possible replacement for Matip who could leave the club this summer.
