It has been revealed that the hierarchy at Manchester United stalled moves to sign a centre-back – Official Website.

The Red Devils were linked with a number of defensive targets during the course of the Premier League summer transfer window, with hopes that Jose Mourinho would finally bring in a defender to his back-line.

However, Mourinho has been left devastated by the efforts of the club’s transfer chiefs and board to secure their targets this summer.

Reports in the Daily Mail claim that the United boss had an agreement with the board on splashing £100 million on a defender

Several targets were lined up to fill in the void, and it is understood that Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane was their first target but soon moved to other targets with the likes of  Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, Jerome Boateng, Yerry Mina and Diego Godin all linked with the Red Devils.

According to the report in Daily Mail, Jose Mourinho has been left ‘angry and frustrated’ at the club’s failure to sign a central defender this summer, leaving him to manage the resources at his disposal.

Manchester United CEO, Ed Woodward reportedly told Mourinho that he will need to sell players before making any additional signing this summer.
