Liverpool players have lauded the performance of Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi after his heroics in the UEFA Champions League (UCL).

Lionel Messi was undoubtedly the star of the show as his Barcelona team took a major step to a first Champions League final appearance in four years with the 3-0 win over Liverpool at home in what was the first leg of their semifinal tie.

After the game, Liverpool defenders Andy Robertson and Virgil Van Dijk hailed Messi as the greatest player in the world after his performance against them.

Robertson and Van Dijk spoke to reporters about Messi shortly after the game which saw the little magician score two goals in the last quarter of the game.

Messi scored from close range with a quarter of an hour left on the clock to double the hosts’ lead after Luis Suarez had scored the first goal of the game in the first half.

Suarez scored and thereafter celebrated against his former club to hand Barcelona a first half lead before the showing from Messi.

The Argentine superstar put Barcelona in a fantastic position ahead of the second leg when he added his brace and a third Barcelona goal on 82 minutes.

Liverpool have it all to do when they host Barcelona in the second leg on Tuesday night hoping to overturn the three-goal deficit.
