Lyon defender Ferland Mendy is closing in on a big money transfer to Spanish giants Real Madrid according to the latest reports emanating from the media in Spain.

Ferland Mendy has been attracting the interest of several Premier League clubs including Europa League winners Chelsea but it seems like the 23-year-old left-back has settled for the top flight of Spanish football.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Mendy will complete a €40m transfer to Real Madrid in the coming days.

Real Madrid are in the market for a new left-sided player following the uncertainty over the left-back options at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Brazilian international Marcelo has been the first choice left-back at Real Madrid for over a decade before he was benched for long periods during the Santiago Solari managerial era at the club earlier this season.

He regained his place following the reappointment of French football legend Zinedine Zidane as the new manager in place of the aforementioned Solari.

Zidane returned to Real Madrid in March and eight months after his resignation last summer.

Marcelo is the first choice left-back under Zidane but the Brazilian is already in the twilight of his career.

Ferland Mendy is most likely to be his long-term replacement considering the fact that present options like Reguilon and Theo Hernandez have not been able to show their quality at Real Madrid on a regular basis.
